About DITA
Nine DITA frames are online. DITA was founded in Los Angeles in 1995 by John Juniper and Jeff Solorio, who came to eyewear from design, photography and film and wanted frames as considered as everything else people chose to wear. Every frame is made in Japan. Production is slow and exacting: titanium, 18K gold and premium acetate pass through hundreds of steps, with hinges and fittings engineered as carefully as the shapes themselves, and a single frame can pass through more than 300 of them.
Five of the nine combine metal with acetate, three are metal and one is acetate, which is why the colour names run to two or three parts: Crystal Mineral Grey / White Gold and Black Glass / White Gold on the two Sahvana cat-eyes, Blossom Tortoise / White Gold on the Khaysun, Crystal Clear / Shiny Silver / Black Iron on the Okulus, Yellow Gold / Crystal Pine on the Artoa.88x aviator. The Lunari is Silver, the Dahlvin Rose Gold, the Lineage.99 aviator Antique Silver / White Gold, and the single acetate, the Waylun, is Crystal Night. Gold here is the colour as DITA names it; ask us for what the brand says a particular frame is made of.
Shapes and sizes
Two each of cat-eye, round, geometric and aviator, plus one square. Eye sizes run from 48mm to 58mm with a median of 52mm: six sit between 47mm and 52mm, and three are 53mm or more, the two aviators and the Dahlvin at 58mm. Most of these frames are one of a kind. Each ships as a frame, free and insured within the US with a signature on delivery, for your own optician to glaze.
Where are DITA glasses made?
In Japan, every one of them. DITA is a Los Angeles brand, founded in 1995, but production is Japanese and deliberately slow: titanium, 18K gold and premium acetate pass through hundreds of steps, with hinges and fittings engineered as carefully as the shapes. All nine DITA frames online are on our Made in Japan page.
Are DITA frames real gold?
DITA lists 18K gold among its materials, alongside titanium and premium acetate. On our listings, names like White Gold, Rose Gold and Yellow Gold are the colours as DITA gives them, and we do not state the metal of a specific frame unless the brand does. Ask us about the one you are considering and we will tell you what DITA says of it.
Why are DITA glasses expensive?
Time and materials. The brand says a single frame can pass through more than 300 production steps in Japan, that hinges and fittings are engineered as carefully as the shapes, and that the materials include titanium and 18K gold. Five of our nine DITA frames combine metal with acetate. Most are one of a kind, and discounted frames, where there are any, are final sale.
Can I get prescription lenses in DITA frames?
Yes. Each frame ships as a frame, and your own optician fits the lenses. The metal and combination models keep the rim thin, so with a strong prescription your optician may suggest a thinner lens material; the Waylun in Crystal Night is the one full acetate rim.
