About Blue Frames

Thirty-seven blue frames are online, from twelve brands, and the top of the page is unusual: Blackfin has eight of them, all titanium, then Henau and J.F. Rey with seven each and KUBORAUM with five. Res/Rei has three, and Blake Kuwahara, Sabine Be, Gamine, Cartier, OVVO, Piero Massaro and Traction Productions one apiece. Twenty-two are acetate, 13 are metal and two combine the two.

The blues divide by material. In acetate the colour runs through the plate: KUBORAUM’s Light Blue on three frames, Henau’s Sky Blue, Cobalt Blue, Slate Blue and Blue Marble, two Blue Tortoises, and Sabine Be’s Translucent Light Blue / Neon Pink. In metal the blue is a finish over titanium or steel, which is where Blackfin’s two-tone names come from: Persian Indigo / Provence Blue, Tropical Blue / Shadow Dark Blue, Storm Navy Blue / Electric Green. OVVO’s Sailor Blue and Cartier’s Gold / Blue are the other metal blues.

Shapes and sizes

Round leads with 13 frames, then geometric with eight, cat-eye and square with six each, two rectangles, an aviator and an oval. Eye sizes run from 35mm, a Traction Productions round in Blue Tortoise, to 56mm, with a median of 49mm: seven frames are 46mm or under, 22 sit between 47mm and 52mm, and eight are 53mm or more. Most of the 37 are one of a kind. Each ships as a frame, insured and free within the US with a signature on delivery, for your own optician to glaze. Returns are accepted within seven days of delivery, less a 15 percent restocking charge, except on discounted frames, which are final sale.

Who do blue glasses frames suit?

Blue is usually recommended for cool undertones, blue or grey eyes and grey or silver hair, and a dark or slate blue works on almost anyone as a softer alternative to black. Lighter blues and cobalt are a deliberate choice. With 37 frames from a 35mm round to a 56mm rectangle, there is a discreet blue and a loud one. Send us a photo if you want a steer.

Are blue frames a good alternative to black?

Dark blue is the classic substitute: it reads as black from across a room and as colour up close. Henau’s Slate Blue, Blackfin’s Antique Dark Blue and the Dark Blue frames from Gamine and Piero Massaro all do that job. Navy without the word blue in its name, such as Blake Kuwahara’s Navy, sits on the shop-all page rather than here.

Are blue metal frames painted?

Blue on a metal frame is a finish applied over the metal, which is how Blackfin gets two colours on one titanium frame and how OVVO gets Sailor Blue on its steel and titanium composite. Blue in acetate is cut from a coloured plate, so it runs through the rim. Thirteen of our blue frames are metal and 22 are acetate.

Can I get prescription lenses in blue frames?

Yes. Every frame ships as a frame, and your own optician fits the lenses. A coloured acetate rim hides the lens edge; a thin metal rim shows it, so with a strong prescription your optician may recommend a thinner lens.
