About Gold Frames

Forty-one gold frames are online, from five brands. Cartier accounts for 24 of them, DITA six, KUBORAUM and Matsuda four each, and Gamine three. Thirty are metal throughout, ten pair a gold front or temple with acetate, and one, a Matsuda in Black / Gold, is acetate with gold detail.

Gold is used here as the brands name their colours, from Gold and Glossy Gold through Brushed Gold and Rose Gold to the White Gold that DITA pairs with crystal, black glass and blossom tortoise. Cartier alone covers Gold / Platinum, Gold / Havana, Gold / Red Wood, Gold / Violet and Gold / Burgundy / Red. Cartier has cut frames in 18-carat gold and platinum since its eyewear began in 1983, and DITA and Matsuda both work in gold alongside titanium; for what a particular frame is made of, read its listing or ask us.

Wide and thin

Because most gold frames are metal, the rims are thin and the sizes run large. Eye sizes go from 39mm to 62mm with a median of 53mm; 23 of the 41 measure 53mm or more, 15 sit between 47mm and 52mm, and three are 46mm or under, the smallest a 39mm KUBORAUM round. Rectangular is the most common shape, with 14 frames, then geometric with eight, round with six, square and cat-eye with four each, aviator with three and oval with two. Metal keeps the rim thin, so the lens shape shows through and the gold reads as a line rather than a block.

Most gold frames here are one of a kind; when a Cartier rectangle in Gold / Havana sells, its listing closes. Each ships as a frame within the US, free, insured and signed for on delivery, and your own optician fits the lenses.

Are gold glasses frames real gold?

Gold on this page is the colour name the brand gave the frame. Cartier has built frames in 18-carat gold and platinum since 1983, DITA lists 18K gold among its materials, and Matsuda works in gold alongside titanium and sterling silver, but we do not state the metal of a specific frame unless the brand does. Who do gold frames suit?

Gold flatters warm undertones and dark hair especially well, and a thin gold rim is the least obtrusive frame there is, which is why it suits people who do not want to look bespectacled. Ours run from 39mm to 62mm across the eye, with 23 of the 41 at 53mm or more, so they lean to broader faces. Rose Gold and Brushed Gold are the quieter choices.

Do gold frames tarnish or wear?

That depends on whether the gold is the metal itself or a finish over another metal, and the brands here use both. Because we do not state the construction of a frame unless the brand does, we would rather you asked about a particular one than assumed. Discounted frames are final sale, so ask before you buy rather than after.

Can gold frames take prescription lenses?

Yes. Each frame ships as a frame, and your own optician glazes it. A thin gold rim shows the lens edge, so with a strong prescription your optician may recommend a thinner lens material; ten of our gold frames pair the metal with an acetate rim that hides more.
