About Matsuda

Seven Matsuda frames are online. Mitsuhiro Matsuda founded his label in Tokyo in 1967 and became one of Japan’s leading fashion designers; his first eyewear collection followed in 1989, drawing on art deco, nineteenth-century industrial metalwork and gothic architecture. After a pause, the eyewear was relaunched in 2012. The frames are made by hand in Japanese workshops in acetate, titanium, sterling silver and gold, with some taking hundreds of steps.

Three of the seven are acetate, two are metal and two combine the two, and the metalwork is where the brand’s intricacy shows. Brushed Gold is on two frames, the M3138 geometric and the M5001 square; Caramel / Brushed Gold on the M2066 and Antique Silver / Navy on the 10103H-I pair metal with acetate. The three acetates are the M1027 in Bottle Green and in Black / Gold, and the 10604H oval in Dark Tortoise. Gold here is the colour as Matsuda names it; ask us for what the brand says a frame is made of.

Shapes and sizes

Three of the seven are square, two are geometric, one is round and one is oval. The sizes are small to medium: eye sizes run from 43mm to 50mm with a median of 49mm, and two, the 10103H-I round at 43mm and the M5001 at 46mm, are on our narrow frames page. Nothing reaches 51mm.

Each of the seven is one of a kind, so what is listed is what is in stock. A frame ships as a frame, insured and free within the US and signed for on delivery, for your own optician to glaze; discounted frames, where there are any, are final sale.

Where are Matsuda glasses made?

In Japan, by hand, in Japanese workshops. Matsuda is a Tokyo label, founded in 1967 by the designer Mitsuhiro Matsuda, and its frames are made in acetate, titanium, sterling silver and gold, some of them taking hundreds of steps. All seven Matsuda frames online are on our Made in Japan page.

Is Matsuda eyewear still made?

Yes. Matsuda’s first eyewear collection appeared in 1989, drawing on art deco, nineteenth-century industrial metalwork and gothic architecture. After a pause, the eyewear was relaunched in 2012 and is made today by hand in Japanese workshops. The seven frames here are current production, most of them one of a kind, from 43mm to 50mm across the eye.

What are Matsuda frames made of?

The brand works in acetate, titanium, sterling silver and gold. Of our seven, three are acetate, two are metal and two pair the two. Names like Brushed Gold and Antique Silver are the colours as Matsuda gives them; we do not state the metal of a specific frame unless the brand does, so ask us about the one you are looking at and we will pass on what Matsuda says.

Can I get prescription lenses in Matsuda frames?

Yes. Each frame ships as a frame, and your own optician fits the lenses. The acetate M1027 and 10604H hide a thicker lens edge; the thin metal M3138 and M5001 show more of it, so a strong prescription may call for a thinner lens material.
