About Oval Frames

Oval is the quietest shape here, and one of the smallest groups: 22 frames from ten brands. KUBORAUM has eight of them, Blake Kuwahara and Sabine Be three each, Cartier two, and Henau, Res/Rei, Gamine, J.F. Rey, Matsuda and Traction Productions one each. Eighteen are acetate, three pair acetate with metal, and one is metal throughout.

The sizes are consistent: eye sizes run from 49mm to 57mm with a median of 50mm, and 19 of the 22 sit between 47mm and 52mm. There are no small ovals online at the moment; the narrowest is 49mm. Because an oval has no corners, it looks a touch smaller on the face than a square of the same number, which is part of why it is the shape people choose when they want the glasses to recede.

Colour without a hard edge

An oval acetate rim shows colour gently, since there is no corner to catch the light. That suits the colours on this page: black matt on two KUBORAUM frames, then Ruby, Pumpkin, Moss, Violet and Light Blue, a Dark Tortoise from Matsuda and a Blonde Tortoise / Neon Yellow from Sabine Be. Acetate is cut from a solid plate, so the colour runs through the rim, and an optician can warm it to adjust the fit. The single metal oval, from Cartier, keeps its rim to a thin gold line.

There are only 22, and most are one of a kind, so the oval you see today may not be here next week. Each ships as a frame within the US, free, insured and signed for on delivery; your own optician fits the lenses.

Who do oval glasses suit?

Ovals are the shape most often suggested for square or angular faces, since the curve softens a strong jaw, and they are also the easiest shape to forget you are wearing. Ours run from 49mm to 57mm across the eye, with most between 49mm and 52mm, so they suit medium faces best. If you are unsure, send us a photo and we will point you to two or three.

Are oval frames old-fashioned?

They can be, in thin wire. In acetate they read differently: a KUBORAUM oval in black matt or a Sabine Be in Blonde Tortoise / Neon Yellow is a strong frame that happens to have no corners. Eighteen of our 22 ovals are acetate, cut from a solid plate so the colour runs through the rim, and most are one of a kind.

What is the difference between oval and round glasses?

Width against height. A round lens is as tall as it is wide; an oval is noticeably wider than it is tall. On the face, the oval sits lower and reads as a horizontal, while the round sits as a circle. Our ovals start at 49mm across the eye; our rounds start at 35mm and stop at 52mm, so the two pages barely overlap in size.

Can I get prescription lenses fitted in an oval frame?

Yes. The frame ships as a frame, and your own optician glazes it to your prescription. Ovals suit most lens types, and a 50mm oval is a comfortable height for a progressive corridor.
