About Square Frames

Fifty square frames from fourteen brands are online today. KUBORAUM holds 18 of them, more than a third of the page, and the rest is spread thinly: four each from Oliver Peoples, Res/Rei and J.F. Rey, three each from Blake Kuwahara, Blackfin, Cartier and Matsuda, then two from Sabine Be and OVVO, and single frames from Henau, DITA, Oscar Mamooi and Piero Massaro. Forty are acetate, eight are metal, and two are combination frames.

The sizes sit in the middle of the store’s range. Eye sizes run from 42mm to 57mm with a median of 50mm; 34 of the 50 fall between 47mm and 52mm, five are 46mm or under, and eleven measure 53mm or more. A square frame carries its width in the corners, so a 50mm square usually looks wider on the face than a 50mm round. If you are moving from a round to a square, consider a size down.

Colour on a square

This is where the patterned acetates gather. Thirteen of the store’s 50 tortoise and havana frames are square, from Oliver Peoples’ Atago Tortoise to KUBORAUM’s Havana Grey and Green Havana, alongside a run of greens: olive, artichoke, lichen, alpine green. Black matt and black shine are here too, as are three crystals, clear and smoked. A square acetate rim is cut from a solid plate, so the colour is the same at the corner as at the centre, and the frame holds its adjustment once an optician has set it.

Who do square glasses suit?

Square frames are usually recommended for rounder or softer faces, where the straight top line and corners add definition. That is a guideline rather than a rule, and plenty of angular faces wear squares well when the frame is narrow enough. Our 50 square frames run from 42mm to 57mm across the eye, so there is a width for most faces. Send us a photo if you would like a second opinion.

What is the difference between square and rectangular frames?

Height. A square frame is nearly as tall as it is wide, so the lens has room for a progressive corridor and the frame sits as a block on the face. A rectangular frame is noticeably wider than it is tall and sits as a band. We tag each of our frames one way or the other; the 43 rectangular frames have their own page.

Are square frames good for progressive lenses?

Generally yes. Progressive lenses need vertical depth so the distance, intermediate and reading zones all fit, and a square frame is one of the taller shapes. Do you have square tortoise shell glasses?

Yes: 13 of our 50 square frames are tortoise or havana acetate, more than any other shape. They include Oliver Peoples’ Atago Tortoise, KUBORAUM’s Havana Grey, Green Havana and Red Havana, and a blue tortoise. Tortoise and havana are patterned acetate, cut from a solid plate, so the pattern runs through the whole rim. Most are one of a kind.
