About Round Frames

Round frames are the largest single shape here: 81 of the 311 frames online, from fifteen brands. KUBORAUM accounts for 16 of them, Henau for 14, and Sabine Be, J.F. Rey and Traction Productions for another 23 between them, with smaller groups from Blackfin, Blake Kuwahara, Res/Rei, Gamine and Piero Massaro. Most are acetate (56), 15 are metal, and 10 pair the two.

They run small. The eye size, the first of the three numbers printed inside the left arm, spans 35mm to 52mm, with a median of 47mm. Thirty-eight of the 81 measure 46mm or under, and none reaches 53mm. Thick rims and thin ones

A round acetate rim is cut from a solid plate, so the colour runs right through it and it holds an optician’s adjustment. The metal rounds from Blackfin, OVVO and Gamine keep the rim to a thin line, which suits the shape when you want the circle to read as a drawn outline rather than a frame. Black shine and black matt lead the colours, followed by slate blue, dark blue, cobalt and coral, and eight transparent crystals that let the roundness show without much weight on the face.

What face shape do round glasses suit?

The usual advice is that a round frame balances a face with straight or angular lines, since the curve softens the jaw and cheekbones. It is advice, not a rule. What matters more is the width: with 38 of our 81 round frames at 46mm or under across the eye, the shape sits close to the face and looks deliberate rather than oversized. What size round frame should I buy?

Our round frames run from 35mm to 52mm across the eye, with a median of 47mm, so most people find a match within a millimetre or two of their current pair. Are round frames better in metal or acetate?

Neither is better; they do different things. Acetate is cut from a solid plate, so the colour runs through it, the rim can be thick, and an optician can adjust it with heat. Metal keeps the rim to a thin line and titanium, as used by Blackfin, adds lightness and rigidity. Fifty-six of our round frames are acetate, 15 metal, and 10 combine the two.

Can I put prescription lenses in a round frame?

Yes. Every frame here ships as a frame, and your own optician fits the lenses to your prescription.
